Guyvy Protein Bar - Chocolate

Protein shakes are a popular pre or post-workout supplement to make sure your body has a plentiful supply of all nine essential amino acids.

So why opt for a Protein Bar instead?

Perhaps you are too short on time to prepare a protein shake or prefer the satisfaction of eating solid food? If so, grabbing a protein bar from the fridge is a great alternative. Small, easy to store and carry, sometimes great-tasting…

Thailand-based brand ‘Guyvy Healthy Food’ has introduced a range of new protein bars, available in 3 enticing flavors; Green Tea, Strawberry, and Dark Chocolate. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the latter.

This is undoubtedly an interesting protein supplement for MMA/Muay Thai training and competition.

Guyvy claims that their product is amongst the top 10 most popular protein bars in Asia! A lofty claim considering that Asia has a total population approaching 5 billion people. So for this statement to be true, Guyvy must be selling truckloads of protein bars throughout Asia each day.

Product labeling and online literature state the net weight of their protein bar as 80g, which provides a whopping 56g of protein in the form of pure whey isolate. Guyvy says that their protein bars are free from flour and egg white, low in fat, plus serve as a good source of energy for your MMA workout, with each bar containing 270 calories.

Taste-Testing: Guyvy Dark-Chocolate Protein Bar

The protein bar arrives in a small, clearly labeled cardboard box. Inside you’ll find the protein bar tightly foil-wrapped, presumably vacuum-sealed to maintain shelf life. In their online marketing spiel Guyvy state that even though the protein bars contain no added artificial preservatives, they can be stored in a refrigerator for up to six months. Even unrefrigerated they are still good for 4-5 days. This would explain the choice of a robust foil pouch to prevent oxygen or moisture exposure.

The foil packaging feels thick and high-quality, which unfavorably proved a little tricky for us to open. Eager to sample the concealed confectionery, we used our teeth to rip open the foil sleeve (don’t try this at home kids). But once inside, you are rewarded with a worthwhile treat.

Guyvy’s dark chocolate flavored variant tasted delicious. Really.

The flavor profile is a deep, satisfying, dark chocolate that tastes so good, that faced with a chocolate craving I’d happily consume a Guyvy Dark Chocolate Protein Bar in place of a less nutritionally rich conventional chocolate bar.

Guyvy’s chocolate protein bar has a consistency that is heavy and dense, dry to touch but very slightly sticky inside, reminiscent of an indulgent dessert. The protein bar is very satiating.

Guyvy Protein Bar Ingredients

As published in Guyvy’s own online literature, each bar is made from:

Price

Certainly, this isn’t the cheapest protein bar available, retailing in Asian supermarkets for the equivalent of almost $3 USD (allowing for changes in exchange rates). However, pro-tip; Shop online and you can find a 10-bar multipack which brings down the cost by 15-20% per bar. Just make sure you keep the bars refrigerated and they’ll stay good for half a year.

Plus I think that the old adage of you get what you pay for proves true here. Given the high quantity of pure whey protein per serving and comparing versus competing products, I think that Guyvy’s chosen price point is not unreasonable.

Best Time to Eat a Protein Bar?

Stating the obvious, you can eat one of these protein bars whenever you are hungry and want protein intake!

Given that the bar is pretty dense and satiating, if you plan to undertake a high-intensity cardio session it might not be the greatest idea to consume an entire bar right before commencing exercise. Maybe better to take a nibble instead, or munch the bar well before hitting the gym.

Post-workout should be fine. You’ll probably want to have some water or other source of hydration handy to accompany the protein bar.

Dietary Considerations and Cautionary Notes

Whilst whey protein can be a good choice of protein source, it shouldn’t be over-consumed. Avoid eating too many of these protein bars – they are highly protein-dense plus contain a lot of calories. (Consume much too much whey protein and you expose yourself to the possibility of a host of issues, including stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhea, gastrointestinal problems, and more). Best to stick to a protein intake of 1.6g of protein per kilogram of body weight.

Plus you probably already understand that whey protein is derived from milk, so isn’t suitable if you are following a strictly vegan or non-dairy diet.

Anyone with an allergy or intolerance to maltodextrin should avoid this product.

Our Verdict: Guyvy Dark Chocolate Protein Bar

Big thumbs up!

From our first try, this product is a winner. To the extent that Guyvy claiming it to be one of Asia’s top 10 protein bar supplements is somewhat believable.

Not only does the chocolate flavored bar yield high amounts of protein and energy to fuel your workout or recovery; It also tastes great and is enjoyable to eat.

After trying the dark chocolate flavor, we’re keen to give Guyvy’s Green Tea and Strawberry variants a try, (reviews to follow soon).

It is not the cheapest protein bar available on the supermarket shelves but does carry all the qualities of a premium supplement. When stacked up against the competition, Guyvy’s Protein Bar offers reasonable value in our opinion.

Best of all, the taste is so good that it makes an ideal, protein-enriched treat to munch on whenever you suffer a chocolate/sugar craving. Maybe that’s the real appeal of this product. Just don’t forget – it contains 270 calories, so factor that into your RDA.
